Synopsis of THEOPHANY (formerly Humble Pastor Will)
When Pastor Will’s daughter Chelsea comes out as a Lesbian he is forced to uphold his “Biblical view of sexuality.” Much to his wife’s chagrin, he tells Chelsea she is not welcome to attend Evergreen Community Church’s services until she “renounces her sin”. He doesn’t condone Chelsea’s lifestyle, which incites her girlfriend Tori to fire up her entourage of social justice advocates and protestors. On Good Friday, one of the church’s most sacred worship events, a crowd of angry neighbors and community members gather shouting “Bigotry is bad theology.” The church doesn’t need that kind of negative attention, but certain members of the church feed off this energy, like Sunday school teacher, super holy roller : Joan. She says, “It’s a blessing from God.” She believes it’s evidence that they doing the right thing according to God’s word.
"Those who are holy are always persecuted for doing what is right. Hate the sin, love the sinner.”
But this tension drives Will and his wife, Annie, apart. Will finds hope in scripture and his relationship with God but is also comforted by the steadfast support of his assistant Lucy. She has stood by his side through all the outrage and congregational backlash. But maybe she has something to do with it? Pastor Will certainly enjoys the attention of his female congregants a little too much. Unfortunately one too many church ladies have festered bitterness against him feeling scorned by his pastoral affection and some by his unwanted advances. (Although he would call it healing prayer.)
While Pastor Will studies late for his Easter sermon he is knocked unconscious and dosed in red wine, left for dead in the church parking lot. On Saturday morning when the staff arrive to decorate the sanctuary for Easter Sunday, they discover Larry, a local homeless man was found dead…..struck by Will’s car. Did Pastor Will drunkenly joyride through the church property? Is Pastor Will being framed? Who is doing it? Is it the worship leader? Is it the local police officer and his new recruit? Are some random hooligans stirring up trouble? Or is it a herd of women claiming to be Jezebel's sisters, a demonically inspired revengeful group of women who’s mission is to take unrepentant pastors down, AKA murder. They have now been assigned to Pastor Will and they plot to make him pay. They dress in tattered, bloody wedding dresses, with skeleton masks, red eyes and all to haunt and taunt him. Apparently this rag tag rebel group has spread to churches in both small towns and big cities alike by women and altar boys, abused at the hands of their patriarchal, faith leaders. A revengeful, underground cult vowing to make hypocrites pay for their sins.
Will’s daughter Chelsea uncovers this sinister plan with multiple conspirators and ultimately comes to her dad’s defense, not before she has to battle a horde of scorned church ladies. Some of these “fallen angels” bonded during a bible study and plotted to humble Pastor Will. There’s a few twists and turns revealed in the conspiracy against Evergreen Community Church but in the end, Pastor Will survives and recovers in the hospital, supposedly safe. Some, not all, of Jezebel’s sisters are found and arrested and Will’s wife Annie takes over leading the congregation of Evergreen Community Church as Will is put on leave by the denominational leaders. Finally the church is turning a new leaf, under Annie’s pastoral leadership but the last scene of the film might communicate otherwise. Just watch her eyes. It’s all in her eyes. Is she part of Jezebel’s sisters? You’ll just have to watch to find out. Watch your back. Don’t cross a church lady.
